JOB TITLE: CAMP DIRECTOR
The Camp Director will plan, coordinate and manage the overall camp program, approve all camp activities and hire camp staff. The Director will be responsible for communicating with all parents, guardians, counselors and other Recreation staff prior to, during and after camp.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Enthusiastic and positive attitude.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to learn and enforce camp rules and regulations and ensures safety in the recreational facilities.
- Must attend staff meetings and orientation during the summer season.
- Must complete and pass a background check.
- Must have Red Cross or equivalent CPR, AED and First Aid Certification prior to the start of camp.
- Develops, in conjunction with the Director of Recreation Services, camp policies and procedures.
- Develops camp packet, calendar and procedures.
- Establishes an operating budget for the camp and controls expenditures.
- Recruits, trains, supervises and develops camp staff.
- Plans and conducts camp staff training at the beginning of camp and facilitate ongoing meetings and necessary trainings to keep staff informed and certifications current.
- Oversees the daily operation of the summer day camp and manage the overall health, safety, welfare and enjoyment of the campers.
- Manage and supervise camp staff
- Coordinates camp activities and delegates responsibilities to staff.
- Plan and implement weekly trips.
- Monitors camp staff timesheets and completes payroll.
- Performs evaluations of camp staff at the end of summer.
- Determines appropriate action for behavioral issues.
- Responsible for annual camp evaluation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Recreation Services.
- Oversees the daily operations of recreational facilities.
- Plans and leads activities such as arts, crafts, sports, games and hobbies.
- Performs first aid following prescribed procedures and contacts emergency medical personnel when required by the situation.
- Demonstrates use of recreational equipment and teaches participants the principles, techniques, and safety procedures for each activity.
- Greets new arrivals and introduces them to other campers; explains camp and facility rules.
- Reports camper complaints to leadership and works to resolve issues.
- Performs other related duties as required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous Camp Director experience.
- College level course work in elementary or secondary education is a plus.
- Previous experience working in a camp setting or teaching is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to swim and pass a swim test (if applicable).
- Able to participate in games, sports, and physical activities including water-based games and activities.
- Able to maintain attention and high level of energy or excitement for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to spend majority the of time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT:
- Must act and represent the City of Cape May in a positive and professional manner.
- Maintain a standard of performance on daily tasks.
- Attend regularly scheduled departmental meetings for all areas necessary.
- Maintain communication with other Recreation staff members and your supervisors.
- Communicate clear and concise information as needed to patrons, students, emergency medical service personnel and police services.
- Adhere to all Cape May Recreation guidelines and non-negotiables.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of development needs of youth.
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques, safety regulations and emergency procedures.
- Knowledge of effective supervisory and management principles and practices.
- Skill in handling sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality.
- Skill in teambuilding; training, evaluating and instructing staff.
- Ability to motivate staff, communicate effectively with all levels of camp staff to address the needs of campers.
- Ability to interact with parents whose children have become a behavioral issue.
- Ability to enforce policies while providing a high level of customer service to campers, faculty/staff, and community members.
- Ability to display a positive attitude for all patrons and Cape May Recreation staff.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manages their time and balance professional and personal commitments.
- Arrives prepared and on time for work and consistently demonstrates service excellence.
- Able to assess a situation and make an informed decision independently.
- Ability to work as a team with other staff and management.
- Positively promotes Cape May Recreation to peers and patrons.
