NOTICE OF UNKNOWN SERVICE LINE COMPOSITION
The City of Cape May Water Department is dedicated to providing safe, reliable water service to our community. In 2021, the State of New Jersey enacted a law that requires all water providers to share with customers the material of the utility-owned and customer-owned service lines that feed their property and notify customers with service lines that they are lead or galvanized steel.
We are committed to meeting this goal and as a result we developed and launched our Lead Service Line Replacement Program. We currently have 77 galvanized service lines that are utility-owned and plan to have these replaced by 2026. We have also identified more than a thousand customer owned service lines and will continue working until all lines are identified.
Please note if your service lines contain lead, it does not mean you cannot use water as you normally do. Your water continues to meet water quality standards. We treat water to prevent corrosion of service lines and household plumbing, and our ongoing lead and copper compliance testing continues to meet State and Federal water quality regulations, including those set for lead.
Cape May’s water mains are not made of lead, however, the water service line that carries the water from the water main in the street to your home could be. Homeowners’ service lines may be made of lead, copper, galvanized steel or plastic.
If you have any questions about the type of water service that feeds your home, please call the Water/Sewer Department at (609) 884-9575.
All customers with unknown service lines will be receiving a letter containing more information within the next few weeks.
